What is an engineering change order?

An Engineering Change Order (ECO) is a document that specifies either a new product or structure design details or proposed changes to existing products.  An ECO promotes effective change management and is important part of an engineering change management (ECM) process.  Engineering Change Orders are commonly found in engineering workflows and are used to implement a change for an existing object or the release of a new one. It’s sent to stakeholders including, but not limited to, the Engineering or R&D department, Quality Control/Assurance, Production, and external design partners.

The engineering change order process

There are several steps workers must complete when implementing an Engineering Change Order. These steps include:

1. Identifying the Issue
2. Reviewing the Engineering Change
3. Creating the Engineering Change Order
4. Reviewing the Order
5. Implementing the Change.

 

1. Identifying the issue

The process begins when engineers identify an issue that needs correcting. Issues can range from inaccurate specifications, functional changes, unexpected costs, infeasible requirements, warranty claims, or compliance violations. Sometimes a formal Engineering Change Notice (ECN) is created to establish and specify the issue and begin the review and change order process.

 

2. Reviewing the engineering change order

Once the issue has been identified, team members must meet to review the change and other relevant documents and determine the best course of action moving forward. This is achieved through a review process, which can be managed using a digital workflow and associated document management system.

 

3. Creating the engineering change

Now that the ECO has been reviewed, engineers can work to create a new version of the original documents in question.
